A favourite across generations, the animated series Hungarian Folk Tales has enjoyed unbroken popularity since 1977, an important milestone of which was 15 October 2020, when the series was added to the Collection of Hungarikums. The Hungarian National Bank (MNB) started a Hungarian Folk Tales commemorative coin series made of non-ferrous metal in 2021 to commemorate this occasion and the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Kecskemét Animation Studio, where the series was produced.
The coins focus on the values of the cartoon series, including its characteristic imagery created by Marcell Jankovics (among others), reflecting and highlighting the values, symbolism, and traditional motives that pervade the folk tales.
The MNB plans to issue a series of seven coins in total, applying the symbolic number seven often also used in traditional folk tales. The first two coins represented the stories of The Tree That Reached to the Sky and Brave Prince Nick.
This year, the MNB issues the coin commemorating the iconic first episode of the animated series, titled Salt. The coin faithfully depicts the conflict between the king and the loving reunion. The commemorative coin was created by combining the work of two artists: its front was designed by Fanni Vékony, and its back by András Szilos.
The official issuing ceremony of the Salt commemorative coin will be held as part of the Kecskemét Animation Film Festival once again.
