THE 16TH KECSKEMÉT ANIMATION FILM FESTIVAL STARTS IN A WEEK
On Wednesday 21 June 2023, the 16th KAFF will kick off with 60 hours of animation and a colourful schedule of events over five days.
In addition to eight feature-length competition films, three feature-length European films will be screened at this year's KAFF. Anca Damian's The Island, a musical retelling of Robinson Crusoe's story in a surreal comedy - The Little Prince meets Monty Python - will be screened at 10:00 on 21 June at the Malom Cinema. Through visual poetry and symbolism, the film offers a critique of current politics in a world where everyone is looking for their own paradise.
At 10:00 on 22 June, Signe Baumane's My Love Affair with Marriage, which tells the story of the rebellion of inner femininity, will be screened at Malom Cinema. At 14:00, Naes Kajssa's Titina, in which the Italian airship engineer lives a quiet everyday life with his beloved dog. One day, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen comes to him to design an airship to conquer the North Pole.
Olivér Hegyi: The Garden of Heart
On 23 June at 19:00, Hírös Agora will screen, among others, the Cannes winner 27 by Anna Buda Flóra, Oliver, the Giant by Júlia Lantos, The Garden of Heart by Oliviér Hegyi, Zéno Mira's About Presence and Gábor Mariai's Hermit Island in the 3rd block of the short film competition.
Viewers can also get to know the work of several artists celebrating their 70th birthdays: on 22 June at 21:00 at Otthon Mozi, a selection of works by Mária Horváth “Horimari” will be shown. Horimari has been involved in Hungarian Folk Tales from the very beginning: she has co-directed or starred in more than 40 episodes out of 100, and is also responsible for the series In the Round Four-Cornered Forest and Gypsy Tales. 80-year-old Béla Ternovszky's cult hit Cat City will be shown on a giant screen in Kecskemét's main square at 19:00 on 23 June, while a selection of films by 70-year-old Pál Tóth “Paja” will be screened at the Otthon cinema at 21:00 on 23 June. Paja has created a unique universe in his oeuvre, maturing the author's version of computer 3D animation. Leo and Fred, one of the jewels of Hungarian series animation, is associated with his name. His work The Sexual Life of Fireflies, which focuses on the group activity of insects, is exceptional, and is only more dazzling than its gags and dazzling light effects.
György Kovásznai: Ça ira, the Song of the French Revolution
A real curiosity is the screening of György Kovásznai's short film Ça ira, the Song of the French Revolution on Saturday 24 June at 14:00 in the Hírös Agora. After the screening, a roundtable discussion will be hosted animation film director József Fülöp, Kossuth Prize-winning graphic artist István Orosz, animation directors Balázs Turai and Zsuzsanna Kreif, composer of the film "Habfürdő" János Másik, and György Kovásznai's daughter Dorottya Kovásznai will participate in a round table discussion entitled "What Does Kovásznai Mean to Us Today".
This year, for the first time in the history of the festival, the KAFFFER art fair will be held, where talented students from five art universities will sell their own handicrafts. KAFFFER will take place in the lobby of the Hírös Agora Cultural Centre, where festival-goers will be able to buy from students from 12-18 June 24.
