CONFERENCE AND MEDALS - THE THIRD DAY OF THE 16TH KAFF

The third day of the 16th KAFF was highlighted by the Digital and Animation Culture Awareness and The Library Cinema programme. The series of presentations explored the critical skill of media literacy, its challenges and opportunities through the interpretive filter of animation, addressing both specific challenges and general lessons. Dominika Szosznyák from MOME outlined the relationship between animation festivals and MOME's diploma films, András Mádl, Director of the NMHH, examined the relationship between animation and audience, Máté Gorka-Focht, PhD student at MOME, presented a methodological approach to film communication, Dr. Endre Mayer, Deputy Head of Department of the NMHH, talked about the relationship between media awareness and animation, and Dr. Tamás Kollarik and Zsolt Petri discussed the education and regulation of animation.

The Conference was organised by Kecskemétfilm, the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) and the Association of Information Technology and Libraries, co-organised by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, the Institute for Art Theory and Methodology of the Hungarian Academy of Arts and the Institute of Media Studies of the NMHH.

A favourite of generations, Hungarian Folk Tales became a Hungaricum in 2020, and the Hungarian National Bank launched a seven-part commemorative coin series in 2021 to honour it and the 50th anniversary of Kecskemétfilm. The commemorative coins focus on the values of the cartoon series. Previous coins have featured the stories The Tree Reaching to the Sky and Little King Nicholas, and this year a coin has been issued with the story of The Salt, the iconic episode that launched the cartoon series. One side of the commemorative coin was designed by Fanni Vékony and the other by András Szilos.

At the festival, sound engineers Miklós Rozslay and Imre Madácsi of Gaston Studio gave a presentation entitled Post-production of animated films - tips and pitfalls, which followed the creation of a film from idea to premiere, using animation examples, showing various working methods, troubleshooting tips and effective communication between different production departments.

Mauro Carraro is one of the jury members of this year's festival and gave an insight into his artistic world in his masterclass. He explained how to translate real-life experiences into animated film using the innovative techniques and thinking of 3D animation, showing his filmmaking practice through photos, original sketches, character designs, illustrated scripts and animatics.

On Friday morning, the first creators' talk was held, where renowned experts György Báron, Péter Gerencsér, Gábor Ulrich and Zoltán Varga discussed the Hungarian short film competition programme in the presence of the directors.

Free screenings continued in the Hírös Agora, the Otthon Cinema and the Malom Cinema, and in the main square of Kecskemét. On each day of the festival, the Primanima Animation Fun Zone Caravan and the National Film Institute's Klassz Workshop are waiting for children to try their hand at animation and natural filmmaking.
