The animation programme of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design was launched in 1980, when the institution was still called Hungarian University of Art and Design. The programme now called MOME Anim since became the most important base for educating young animation artists, and a leading creative studio in Hungary, moreover, the student’s animations find their way into the most prestigious festivals of the world. The first year of the programme at the old university accepted students who had already gained substantial professional experience as animators at Pannonia, the state animation studio at the time (such as Sándor Békési, Zoltán Lehotay, Csaba Szórády). The graduation films of these animators aspiring to be directors prove that their makers not only have professional experience, but the ability to create independent, autonomous worlds. And this remains the main characteristic of young directors working at the animation studio of MOME. Their films radiate personality, the urge to tell a story, or the spirit of non-narrative visual experimentation. The fact that several of the student films won the Grand Prix or the prize for Best Short Film at the Kecskemét Animation Film Festival (Life Line, FIN, Rabbit and Deer, Tale, Bond, Off Season), clearly shows the talent of the artists behind these masterpieces of diverse style often created using very unique techniques, as well as the high quality of the work done at the animation programme of MOME.
