Ten-year-old Ellie has just started middle school. It's not easy to make friends when you're shy, so Ellie prefers to observe birds on the way to school, in the playground, or by reading about them. One day, the school librarian, Anna, decides to trust Ellie by lending her a rare ornithology book. However, when Ellie arrives to return the book, she discovers that the library doors are already closed. Ellie decides to take it back to Anna's home, which is a few miles from school and located on an island in the Loire River—an island full of birds. The journey turns into a life-changing adventure!
