The Belgian animation programme consists of three sections, in which I selected student and professional projects, promising works never seen before, and also acclaimed animated films recognized by festival awards. My goal was not to provide an overview of the history of Belgian animation or the oeuvre of the most famous Belgian directors. Many other excellent films could have been featured in the programme besides the ones selected by me, but I decided to choose works that touched me with their ingenuity, playfulness, beauty, intelligence, credibility and sense of humour. In the hope that it will make the films even more enjoyable, I compiled the blocks by topics:
– Love Stories and Other Disasters
– Tragic Tales and Other Comedies
– Terrible Beauty
Now it is up to the audience to discover the connection between the films, and to get a feel of what makes Belgian animation so great—if there is such a thing as Belgian animation as a uniform school.
